At Tribe, we stock Manos Del Uruguay because of their beautiful, unique yarns and our love for this special non-profit organisation, which is owned by the women of Manos themselves.
The company was founded in 1968, giving these women jobs that would allow them to provide for their families, be independent and self-develop while staying in their home villages and keeping their roots and traditional skills.
Manos kettle dyes its yarns in small pots to achieve the unique striated colours, patterns and space-dyed combos synonymous with the brand. Skeins may be dyed up to six times to achieve the necessary complexity and quality, after which they are sun-dried.
No two skeins are the same, and every skein carries the signature of the craftswoman who made it, together with the name of the locality and the cooperative where it was made.
The main content in their yarns is wool from local sheep farmers, whose flock graze freely on natural grass pastures.
Manos Del Uruguay is a brand steeped in heritage, with a real passion for female empowerment and keeping traditional crafts and techniques alive.
Using generational skills inherited from their mothers and grandmothers, their exceptional knowledge and expertise in wool are second to none. By sharing their unparalleled know-how of this natural material, the brand can support Uruguay’s rural women and share the country’s fabulous traditions with the world.
Of course, as with many brands stocked here at Tribe, Manos Del Uruguay yarn is also renowned for its ethics and fair trade; in fact, they’ve been a member of the World Fair Trade Organisation since 2009.
