    • We are thrilled to stock this stunning, super warm, woollen spun yarn by Wild Earth Yarns!

Alpine is a very special blend of dyed Polwarth wool and undyed possum fur.

Polwarth is a crossbreed of Merino and Lincoln sheep: so it's got all the benefits of merino - the stable fibre, low grease and luxurious feel - with the length provided by the Lincoln, giving it more springiness.

When it's worsted spun, it usually lends more silkiness, but we prefer it woollen spun, like in this yarn, where you get a lighter, warmer, bouncier yarn and fabric. Also, it makes colourwork a dream!

The fur used is hand plucked from possums which are trapped in the South Island of New Zealand.  We only use the back fur as this is the more superior fibre.

Possum is truly one of nature’s super hero fibres, possessing exceptional insulating properties and providing superior warmth. This insulation is attributed to the hollow structure of possum fibres, which effectively traps heat close to the body.

Despite it’s excellent warmth, possum fibre is incredibly soft and gentle against the skin. It offers a luxurious feel akin to cashmere.

The possum fibre is sourced from the brushtail possum, an invasive species in New Zealand that poses a significant threat to native flora and fauna.

By utilising possum fibre, not only are natural resources conserved, but efforts are also made to control the possum population.

The New Zealand Fur Council say: “New Zealand sourced possum fur is recognised globally as being green and ethically sound. Possum fur is a natural product that comes from renewable resources. It has a 20 to 30 year life span. In comparison fake fur is made from petroleum-based products derived from non-renewable resources. New Zealand sourced possum fur is 100 percent from wild pest populations."

    • About Wild Earth Yarns

We have heard so many great things about Wild Earth. They are the spinners for the lovely Merino Possum yarn, and Haunui yarns, so we are super familiar with the quality of their products and care given to the whole process, especially in selecting the best fibers.

Wild Earth Yarns is both a manufacturer of yarn, working on contract for wool growers, and a retailer producing its own exclusive ranges and blends of wool and fibre yarns.

Wild Earth Yarns was set up by husband and wife owners, Graham and Jacqui. An opportunity to purchase a complete fibre processing plant from the Wool Research Institute provided the impetus to set up the business in 2010. For the first 4 years Jacqui ran the business while Graham juggled a daytime job within the industry, working evenings at Wild Earth Yarns.

Since Graham joined the business full time, Wild Earth Yarns has continued expansion with the acquisition of a balling machine and more recently a super-fine fibre processing plant, which will enable Wild Earth Yarns to process more high-quality Merino wool into exquisite fibre.

Blair, Graham and Jacqui's son joined the business early in 2023 as their succession plan where he is learning all aspects of the business
