Sock Yarns
All the sock yarns in this collection at Tribe are great for making socks! They’ve been specially selected for gauge (for most sock patterns) and for the durability of fibres for hardworking feet.
The majority contain nylon for added strength and stretchiness, but not all. If you prefer an alternative to acrylic, we generally suggest holding a strand of Silk Mohair yarn with your sock yarn in areas where your socks are prone to wear thin.
Similarly, yarns containing Silk and Blue Faced Leicester (BFL) make for lovely, strong sock wool without the need for anything synthetic. As with all hand-dyed yarns, we recommend hand-washing.
Durability and comfort are essential when choosing a suitable sock yarn. But also, consider these aspects:
- Gauge & weight - Sock yarns have a specific gauge, which most designs follow. They require thinner knitting needles (usually about 2.25mm - 2.75mm). The aim is to create a strong, fairly dense fabric for strength and shape.
- Colour & pattern - Socks are one area where you can really get creative! Show them off, or hide them in a pair of boots. Either way - have fun with them!
- Moisture wicking - The properties of wool have perfect breathability and wick away moisture. So, look for a high wool content in your sock yarn.
