Sashiko is the traditional Japanese technique of needlework quilting, using a simple running stitch to create intricate, beautifully decorative patterns ideal for embroidery, patchwork and quilting. Pronounced ‘Shash-ko’, the translation means stab-stitch, a nod to the small running stitch that forms the foundations of hundreds of distinctive patterns.
The Sashiko stitch creates simple yet stunning Japanese embroidery, a technique that originated in rural north Japan 400 years ago, where clothing and means of keeping warm were needed for the harsh winters.
Traditionally, Sashiko stitching used hemp to produce this clothing when cotton was too expensive for everyday garments. The colour choice was also restricted; an indigo dye was employed as it was easy to obtain, and people also believed that the colour deterred insects – this gave Sashiko embroidery the classic ‘cream-on-blue’ aesthetic we associate with the technique today.
