    • Laine's beautiful autumn issue is here! In Laine 18 (called Weekend Getaway) we take time to relax in a little cottage by the forest. The versatile and comfortable knits are suited for both indoors and outdoors, and they are the perfect addition to your wardrobe as the days get colder.

      Issue 18, Autumn 2023, includes:

      • 11 knitting patterns (both charts and written instructions provided): 5 sweaters, 2 cardigans, 1 slipover, 1 shawl, 1 hat and 1 pair of mittens.

      • An interview with the American knitwear designer and fashion historian Sydney Crabaugh, who specialises in vintage knits and runs her own virtual knitting school.

      • An article about Shetland and its knitting traditions, with two inspiring designers — Gudrun Johnston and Mary Jane Mucklestone — as our guides.

      • Jeanette Sloan’s Fibre Talk: a regular article on Jeanette chatting with interesting people. In this issue, she meets Tanis “Akutuq” Simpson, whose company produces yarn from qiviut: a fibre that comes from the undercoat of the muskox.

      • Five Ways by our regular writer Päivi Kankaro, who gathers experts’ tips on mending your knits.

      • Where I Knit: a regular piece that pictures people knitting in their favourite spot. In this issue, we meet Nora, who likes to knit on the rooftop of her home in Cologne, Germany.

      • Seasonal recipes to inspire your autumn cooking.

      • Book reviews

Designers featured in this issue: Jenny Ansah, Marcela Chang, Melissa Clulow, Emma Ducher, Jenna Kostet, Ksenia Naidyon, Olga Putano, Tiia Reho, Anna Sjösvärd and Julia Wilkens.

      Jenny Ansah — Horsma

Featuring bobbles and lace, while the cuff of the mittens and the brim of the beanie are worked in twisted ribbing. Both accessories are knitted with two yarns held together.

      Yarn 1:
      Pudding by Mrs Moon
      Andorra by Kelbourne Woolens
      Merino Cloud by artyarns
Road to China Light by The Fibre Co
      Opus by Walcot

      Yarn 2:
One of our Lace Weight Silk Mo yarns

      Marcela Chang — Otoño

Worsted-weight sweater, worked in an all-over colourwork pattern that is fun and fast to knit. Otoño is worked from the top down seamlessly, and short rows are worked at the back for a better fit. The design is very versatile: you can knit the sweater in two or multiple colours.

      Yarn:
      The Croft by WYS
Spiral Grain Light Worsted by Urth Yarns
      Origin by Walcot
      Feli by Illimani
Sweater Yarn by Blue Sky Fibres

      Melissa Clulow — Turtle Dove

Soft and light, the cardigan is knitted holding two strands of mohair with a strand of woolly, non-superwash yarn. This top-down cardigan is the perfect companion over jeans and a tee, a dress, or even pyjamas for weekend lounging!

      Yarn 1:
Le Petit Lambswool by Biches & Buches
Le Cashmere & Lambswool by Biches & Buches
Woolstok Light by Blue Sky Fibres
      Merino Cloud by artyarns
      Supersoft by Holst
      Amble by The Fibre Co

      Yarn 2:
One of our Lace Weight Silk Mo yarns

      Emma Ducher — Orée

Orée is a loose-fitting, comfortable sweater for autumn: chic but still practical to wear outdoors. It has a high turtleneck collar, and for an elegant shape, the front of the sweater is worked shorter than the back.

The sample here is knit with 2 yarns held together. One is a Lace Weight Silk Mo, the other a "worsted" weight.

We think this sweater would be perfect knit with only one thread of Woolstok Worsted by Blue Sky Fibres, or Le Gros Silk & Mohair by Biches & Buches.

If you'd like a yarn which you could hold with a thread of SIlk Mohair, we recommend one of these:
      Santi by Illimani
      Plump DK by Mrs Moon
      Clinton Hill Bespoke DK Cashmere
      Scout by Kelbourne Woolens
      Socks Yeah DK by Coopknits

      Jenna Kostet — Himmeli

The airy colourwork pattern gives Himmeli a contrast with conventional multi-coloured yoke sweaters.

      Yarn:
      Manchelopi by Wooldreamers
      Woolstok Worsted
       by Blue Sky Fibres
Spiral Grain Light Worsted by Urth Yarns
      Feli by Illimani
Brushed Suri by Blue Sky Fibres

      Ksenia Naidyon — Barberry

Barberry is a generously sized scarf full of texture. It features cables, moss stitch, Japanese wrapped stitches and simple lace. Try the scarf on as you go to see which length works best for you — the pattern is easy to adjust.

      Yarn:
      Lore by The Fibre Co
      Socks Yeah DK by Coopknits
      Clinton Hill Bespoke DK Cashmere
      Jenson by Isager
The Croft Shetland DK by WYS

      Olga Putano — Saunseray

Saunseray is a roomy, drop-shoulder sweater knitted bottom up, in the round and flat. The sleeves are picked up and worked from the top down. The sweater is full of easy-to-execute cables, which provide an engaging yet relaxing knitting experience.

      Yarn:
      Lalland DK by Di Gilpin
Road to China Light by The Fibre Co
      Eco Melange by Isager
      Metalico by Blue Sky Fibres
      Santi by Illimani

      Tiia Reho — Helli

Helli is an elegant yet simple slipover, worked in a combination of wool and silk mohair. It features an easy but eye-catching combination of Stockinette Stitch and Moss Stitch. The body of the slipover is straight with some positive ease at the chest. Helli is a soft and feminine pattern with some masculine elements, such as the shoulders. These contrasts make the garment interesting.

      Yarn 1:
Woolstok Light by Blue Sky Fibres
      Le Petit Lambswool
       by Biches & Buches
      Supersoft by Holst
      Merilin by Isager
      Organic Soft Merino by KAOS
      16 Fingering by Urth

      Yarn 2:
One of our Lace Weight Silk Mo yarns

      Anna Sjösvärd — Huldra

Huldra is a cosy raglan sweater with stranded knitting. The sweater has floats all over, which adds warmth and fullness. The jumper comes in two versions, normal length and cropped.

Woolstok WorstedManchelopi by Wooldreamers (we love the idea of thrumming with this yarn too!)
Spiral Grain Light Worsted by Urth Yarns
      Madara by Noro
      Feli by Illimani
      E+2 by Einrum

      Julia Wilkens — Preppy

The Preppy pattern is a relaxed cardigan based on the classic varsity jacket. Preppy is knitted seamlessly from the top down, and the sleeves and body are worked at the same time in two different colours. This application of intarsia is at the same time logical and unusual.

      Yarn 1:
      Feli by Illimani
Brushed Suri by Blue Sky Fibres
      Amelie by Illimani
      L+2 by Einrum

      Yarn 2 (cuffs):
      Organic Soft Merino by KAOS
      16 Fingering by Urth
      Merino Cloud by artyarns
      E+2 by Einrum
